Some (Linux) Programs
On this page I will describe some (maybe not that well known) programs I use in every-day work...
Vim . After some time with Linux I have learned to use Vim, a powerful text editor. It's fantastic and I can only recommend it...! You can even view some of my Vim configuration tips!
LaTeX . One of the most amazing programs. I tend to use LaTeX instead of other programs to write my papers. A small problem is when you don't do it a lot you tend to forget the commands. Anyway, it's fun and it saves a lot of work when writing papers!
Gimp . Gimp is a powerful graphics manupulation program. I use it for my webpage and when I have to work with graphics/photos besides this.
Xfig . Xfig is a program to draw diagrams. Get my Xfig EER library here.
Irssi . When I've got time i do chat a lot. Also, when I need help with a program I usually try to solve it via a chat-session (or Usenet News (
Google Groups Archive) or Internet or...). I tried several IRC-clients and found Irssi was the most exciting one. Not only because you can even write
Perl
scripts for it...
rio . I do have a MP3-player. The problem is, the manufacturer of it does not support Linux. So I'm really happy to know the little program rio to manage my files.
Grip . Since you already know I have a MP3-player I also have to rip some of my CDs. Legally! :-) I use Grip with
LAME.
Lynx . A text(!) browser. Simple but powerful. Sometimes I use Lynx when pages are overloaded with graphics and I'm interested in the information only. It's fast and quite reliable. And it's fun to be logged into another computer, then - again - logged into another... then starting Lynx for surfing... *smile*
Seamonkey (formerly known as Mozilla) . If you don't quite like the idea of a text browser, try Seamonkey! If you want to know some (configuration) tips for Seamonkey don't hesitate to read them!
Z shell . I use the zsh as my main shell. You can download my .zshrc for configuration tipps. Before switching to the zsh I used the
Bash Shell a lot. You can download my .bashrc for configuration tipps.
Perl . A great programming language. At
http://www.perladvent.org/2004/ you can find "The 2004 Perl Advent Calender" which lists some useful modules and tips.
